# The "Non-Lucrative Visa" Trap: Why It Might Not Be Right For You

The NLV has become a "trap" for many expats who misunderstand its restrictions. Understand the strict rules before you apply.

For decades, the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV) was the default option for anyone retiring or taking a sabbatical in Spain. You prove you have savings, and Spain lets you live there. Simple, right?

However, with the introduction of the Digital Nomad Visa, the NLV has become a "trap" for many expats who misunderstand its restrictions.

## The Strict "No Work" Rule
The NLV is exactly what it sounds like: non-lucrative. You are absolutely prohibited from working while residing in Spain. The trap is that many expats assume this only means working for a *Spanish* company. **This is false.** You cannot work remotely for a foreign company either.

## The Tax Implications
Even though you aren't working, living in Spain for more than 183 days a year on an NLV makes you a Spanish tax resident. Spain will tax your worldwide income.

## The Renewal Nightmare
To renew the NLV after your first year, you must prove you have double the required funds (to cover a two-year period).
